Door Handle Replacement
It's worth it to replace door handles if you aren't happy with the way they appear, or if they are difficult to use. With a little patience, you can install a new handle in no time.
Modern door handles are often equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws for an attractive appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't already have them.
Remove the Old Handle
The door handle isn't just a decorative feature for your home, but it's also an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle can start to lose its grip or feel loose. It may be beginning to appear old and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time to replace it.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious problem as you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door, which could put your family and yourself at risk.

The latch plate should be removed from the door once the screws have been removed. If it's stuck or won't move then use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes open the plate.
Now you can move on to preparing the new door strike plate for installation. Utilizing the screws made of wood that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws because this could damage the strike plate.
If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, shut and open the door to determine if it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't you'll need to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or even forward or back until the door closes and latches correctly.
If the door still moves or jiggles, then you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too shallow, the wrong size latch, or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but with a metal file instead of a chisel and hammer.
Removal of the Latch
The latch is the angled metal piece that is able to move in and out of the hole on the inside edge of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door is wiggles when you close it, changing the latch may be all you need to fix it.
It's difficult to see the screws that hold the latch to the door, but there's usually a small hole on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and remove it. After you've removed your trim plate, it will be easy to remove the latch and the bolts that keep the spindle and latch in the position.
If the latch is not easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the latch's slot that is recessed and gently move it around until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. You may have repeat this process a few times before you can pull the latch out.
After the old latch has been removed it should be possible to insert the new latch into the slot with no difficulties. Make sure that the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers, and then use the new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.
Measure the existing backset (the distance between the center of the large hole on the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Check that the latch size of the new handle matches the measurement.
If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll require an entirely new one. If you are not changing locks, a new lock should fit in the recess you have already installed, and work with the keys you have already.
